The next directive—"Give them a chair"—introduces a paradoxical acceptance. Rather than resisting or trying to eliminate them, the speaker acknowledges their presence, offering them a place to settle. Yet, this invitation does not make them any less intrusive. "Where they sit, / the fabric will be wet / for days." This suggests that mistakes, once made, do not simply disappear; they leave lasting effects, lingering long after their initial occurrence. The dampness symbolizes the residual discomfort they create, a constant reminder of their presence.

The final lines shift from the physical to the emotional and psychological consequences of mistakes: "We have to talk about / everything else / in their presence."
