To brace the heart with words of sense and strength Will dull the sharpness of a moment's pain, But there's one cry that wrings the whole day's length: That I shall never know your love again, That I may wake no more that curious glow Within your eyes, nor pass my finger-tips Over your golden hair, nor ever know The precious consummation of your lips. I cannot lay these down in silence dumb! For you are still the joy you found in me -- How can you sleep and never count the sum Of sorrow up and down?
