DESERT MONTAINS (MEXICAN COAST), by STANTON ARTHUR COBLENTZ First Line: Their loneliness lies brooding like a cloud Last Line: Mere spindrift flying in a windy place. Subject(s): Mexico; Mountains; Hills; Downs (great Britain) | |||
Their loneliness lies brooding like a cloud Over the long surf whitening from the west, Where in stark lines they billow, close abreast, Deep-canyoned, bare of trees, and darkly proud. Peak upon peak they jut, colossal-browed, Range beyond range, with naked flanks and crest, Where the lean asp, the condor make their nest, While cactus stares on slopes no man has plowed. The patience of immensity dwells here, Looking with sightless eyes on time and space -- To which a thousand eons and a year Are one, the lizard equal to our race, And the deep, swelling tides of man appear Mere spindrift flying in a windy place. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...CALIFORNIA SORROW: MOUNTAIN VIEW by MARY KINZIE CONTRA MORTEM: THE MOUNTAIN FASTNESS by HAYDEN CARRUTH GREEN MOUNTAIN IDYL by HAYDEN CARRUTH IF IT WERE NOT FOR YOU by HAYDEN CARRUTH BIRTH by STANTON ARTHUR COBLENTZ |
