MY PICTURE, by ABRAHAM COWLEY Poet Analysis Poet's Biography First Line: Here, take my likeness with you, whilst 'tis so Last Line: Who then shalt but my picture's picture be. Subject(s): Portraits | |||
1. HEre, take my likenesse with you, whilst 'tis so; For when from hence you go, The next Sun's rising will behold Me pale, and lean, and old. The Man, who did this Picture draw, Will swear next day my face he never saw. 2. I really beleeve, within a while, If you upon this shadow smile, Your presence will such vigour give, (Your presence which makes all things live) And absence so much alter Mee, This will the substance, I the shadow be. 3. When from your well-wrought Cabinet you take it, And your bright looks awake it; Ah be not frighted, if you see The new-soul'd Picture gaze on Thee, And hear it breath a sigh or two; For those are the first things that it will doe. 4. My Rivall Image will be then thought blest, And laugh at me as dispossesst: But Thou, who (if I know thee right) I' th' substance doth not much delight, Wilt rather send again for Mee, Who then shalt but my Picture's Picture be. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...AQUATINT FRAMED IN GOLD by AMY LOWELL PORTRAIT OF X (III) by THOMAS LUX PORTRAIT OF THE GREAT WHITE HUNTER FOXHUNTING IN THE ABSENCE OF BIG... by CLARENCE MAJOR PORTRAIT OF A MAN by ALICIA SUSKIN OSTRIKER PORTRAITE DE L'ARTISTE by ALICIA SUSKIN OSTRIKER FAMILY PORTRAIT by KENNETH PATCHEN FEMALE PORTRAIT, 19TH CENTURY by TOMAS TRANSTROMER |
