THE LOUDER CALL, by J. D. EASLEY First Line: Will the pintos make enough to do Last Line: Or planted patch or orchard lot. | |||
Will the pintos make enough to do, Will these potatoes carry us through, Will there be corn enough for bread And fatten hogs, a couple of head, Will there be hay for the only cow And the lazy mule I ride and plow? Thoughts like these or kindred kind Engross the hill-side farmer's mind From break of day to setting sun, From planting time till harvest's done, While prodding or coaxing the stony soil That pays so stingily his toil. A golden sunset tinged with red Fills his soul with nameless dread, No beauty in it he can see But sign of drenching rain to be Before there dawns another day To spoil his crop of new-mown hay. Unusual the dogwood's blow Portends abundant corn will grow; While beauty nods at every turn He only seeks a sign to learn Success will come with garden plot Or planted patch or orchard lot. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SIMON THE CYRENIAN SPEAKS by COUNTEE CULLEN IDYLLS OF THE KING: LANCELOT AND ELAINE by ALFRED TENNYSON EMBLEMS OF LOVE: 1.
