Well, tiptoe out then from my heart But please go lightly. One time I thought I held you locked But now I see—too tightly. So on the threshold as you go Ask not the questions I may know But ponder this, I am no foe Though you—unfriendly. But when you cut apart the bond Leave not the wound unsightly, And leave me just a singing song To give me joy—so brightly. I cannot choose or think as yet To ask you—rightly To close the door forever shut So none may find what I have grown Of solace for new griefs Or pleasures—quietly.
