TOYONS IN A BERKELEY GARDEN, by MAME NESBIT HAYNES First Line: O toyons, growing by the garden wall Last Line: Of a friend, I greet you! Subject(s): Berkeley, California; Gardens & Gardening; Holly | |||
O Toyons, growing by the garden wall, Drinking your moisture from a lily-pool And being lulled to rest by cooing dove; Do you hark back to hillsides bare and brown? What memories have you of some cool ravine Where parent stem found nourishment From seed dropped carelessly by flying bird, Or from the flock, in grazing over the land? From what mysterious elements of earth Come leaves of living green, serrate and strong, Defying greed of beast and worm, yet gathering up The sunbeams for chemistry at root? And from what magic paintpot come the Perfect berry-clusters hurling a scarlet challenge In my face? O Toyons, growing in the loved garden Of a friend, I greet you! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HOW CAME THE HOLLY BERRIES RED? by CHARLES W. E.
