OUR LITTLE HELPMEET, by JULES LAFORGUE Poet's Biography First Line: If my manner speaks to you Last Line: I am woman; I am known. Subject(s): Women; Women's Rights; Feminism | |||
If my manner speaks to you Don't take on an angry tone; There's no pose in what I do: I am Woman; I am known. Loose flung locks, or tightly chaste: Tell me, which upsets your heart? I have mastered every art, I have souls for every taste. Pluck the flower of my cheek, Drink my lipsnot their reply, And beyond that do not seek: None sees there; not even I. You can have no hope to win. If I tender you my hand You are but a naïve male, I, the Eternal Feminine. Beyond the stars my intent races. I myself am Isis grand; None has looked beneath my veil: Think alone of my oasis. If my manner speaks to you Don't take on an angry tone; There's no pose in what I do: I am Woman; I am known. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE RIGHTS OF WOMAN by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD THE RIGHTS OF WOMAN by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD HEMATITE HEIRLOOM LIVES ON (MAYBE DECEMBER 1980) by ALICE NOTLEY ON THE BEACH by CLARIBEL ALEGRIA FEMINIST POEM NUMBER ONE by ELIZABETH ALEXANDER HYPOCRITE SWIFT by LOUISE BOGAN FOR A GODCHILD, REGINA, ON THE OCCASION OF HER FIRST LOVE by TOI DERRICOTTE HESTER'S SONG by TOI DERRICOTTE |
