WEIGHING ANCHOR, by MABEL F. MARTIN First Line: Reality, unloose that steady grip Last Line: Break round her bows, and it is time for going. Subject(s): Anchors; Sonnet (as Literary Form) | |||
Reality, unloose that steady grip That holds me firmly to the rocks of day. Through sleep's warm water I would glide and sway. Reality, release me! Let me slip! An anchor's use is but to hold a ship While it must linger idle in the bay, But at the time of voyaging we weigh The anchor and the vessel makes her trip. My soul has rocked at anchor while my hands Have loaded her with cargoes of routine, But now her hold is filled to overflowing, Sleep's tide is rising through the shifting sands Of little worries; waves of foaming green Break round her bows, and it is time for going. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WAS THAT REALLY A SONNET? by ANSELM HOLLO RETICENT SONNET by ANNE CARSON SONNET: OF THREE GIRLS AND OF THEIR TALK by GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO WHAT THE SONNET IS by EUGENE JACOB LEE-HAMILTON ON A MAGAZINE SONNET by RUSSELL HILLARD LOINES THE HOUSE OF LIFE: THE SONNET (INTRODUCTION) by DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI |
