FARM MOTHER, by ERMA MELLISH First Line: Folks said that marthy'd never lived Last Line: Of small red feet upon the stairs . . . Subject(s): Children; Farm Life; Life; Childhood; Agriculture; Farmers | |||
Folks said that Marthy'd never lived . . . She'd never seen a picture show, Never seen the bright lights glow In city streets, Or rode on a new-fangled train. She'd never felt the feel of silk Against her rough, coarse skin . . . And how scraggy and thin She looked each spring, In that old faded dress . . . Strange how folks will guess about The things they do not know. Folks said that Marthy'd never lived, Yet she had felt the hungry-thrill Of tiny lips against her breast, And kissed away the tear-stained eyes Of kids before they went to rest In little trundle beds, And heard the echoing treads Of small red feet upon the stairs . . . | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...KICKING THE LEAVES by DONALD HALL THE FARMER'S BOY: WINTER by ROBERT BLOOMFIELD THE FARMER'S BOY: SPRING by ROBERT BLOOMFIELD THE FARMER'S BOY: SUMMER by ROBERT BLOOMFIELD THE FARMER'S BOY: AUTUMN by ROBERT BLOOMFIELD |
