THE SOUL OF A PROMISE, by E. DORCAS PALMER First Line: I walked a green-edged path that led Last Line: The soul had flown! Subject(s): Promises | |||
I walked a green-edged path that led Through sheltered groves of Memory, I came upon a maiden there With form of such rare symmetry I marvelled at her loveliness The latent strengththe supple grace I spoke, and as she turned, again I marvelledat her lovely face. "May I not seek the name of one Who roams this half-forgotten shade?" I asked. She smiled, "I am the Soul Of a Promise you have made." Time hurried ononce more I sought The path, the grove, the lovely maid I could not find her, nor could see Her roaming elsewhere in the glade. Unhappy, I turned back to trace The solitary way I came. "Is a Promise so short-lived?" I grieved. "Could she not always stay the same!" I found her in a wayside path Lying before me, cold and still, Broken, white, and oh, so changed! What terrible fate had played her ill! Anguished, I cried, "Are you my own?" She answered notthis form I wrought The soul had flown! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A PROMISE TO PAY by ROWLAND EYLES EGERTON-WARBURTON NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS by EUGENE FIELD WINTER PROMISES by MARGE PIERCY WAITING FOR ICARUS by MURIEL RUKEYSER PROMISES: 1.
