LEAVING HARBOR, by
First Line: A sandy beach, shell - strewn, where jellyfish
Last Line: A fearless, stately ship puts out to sea!
Subject(s): Seashore; Beach; Coast; Shore

A sandy beach, shell-strewn, where jellyfish
Sprawl glistening silverly; white-gleaming foam
Fast melts in underlapping waves whose lips
Caress the waiting stretch of sand. Far off
In fascinating groups gay whitecaps flash,
Shrill sea gulls swoop and rise upon swift wings
Against a sullen sun; in silhouette
A lighthouse, steadfast, strong, holds tireless watch.
Then slowly . . . slowly . . . on that pathless field
Of sombre blue -- majestic, brave, serene, --
Face toward the vast unseen -- unhurried, poised,
Prepared to meet whate'er may lie beyond, --
A fearless, stately ship puts out to sea!
