LEAVING HARBOR, by ISLA PASCHAL RICHARDSON First Line: A sandy beach, shell - strewn, where jellyfish Last Line: A fearless, stately ship puts out to sea! Subject(s): Seashore; Beach; Coast; Shore | |||
A sandy beach, shell-strewn, where jellyfish Sprawl glistening silverly; white-gleaming foam Fast melts in underlapping waves whose lips Caress the waiting stretch of sand. Far off In fascinating groups gay whitecaps flash, Shrill sea gulls swoop and rise upon swift wings Against a sullen sun; in silhouette A lighthouse, steadfast, strong, holds tireless watch. Then slowly . . . slowly . . . on that pathless field Of sombre blue -- majestic, brave, serene, -- Face toward the vast unseen -- unhurried, poised, Prepared to meet whate'er may lie beyond, -- A fearless, stately ship puts out to sea! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SEASHORE by JOHN FREDERICK NIMS EASTERN LONG ISLAND by MARVIN BELL THE WIND IS BLOWING WEST by JOSEPH CERAVOLO IF SOMETHING SHOULD HAPPEN by LUCILLE CLIFTON THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER EMPTIES INTO THE GULF by LUCILLE CLIFTON GEOGRAPHY AS WARNING by MADELINE DEFREES POWER FAILURE by MADELINE DEFREES DARKNESS by ISLA PASCHAL RICHARDSON |
