RUMMAGE by HAYDEN CARRUTH

Poet Analysis

First Line: GROWING OLD IN SHABBY CLOTHES
Last Line: BLOWING IN THE WIND
Subject(s): LIFE;

Growing old in shabby clothes
is a bewilderment for someone
who wanted all his life
to wear something handsome
under the handsome sun.

In darkness under the bent
moon I bend
to pick from the frozen road
a shred of birch bark
blowing in the wind.
