DEDICATION OF THE FIRST SONNETS TO A FRIEND ... by GEORGE SANTAYANA

Poet Analysis

First Line: I COULD WISH MY NUMBERS FELL
Last Line: AND OUTLIVE THE LAST FAREWELL.
Subject(s): MARRIAGE; WEDDINGS; HUSBANDS; WIVES;

(ON THE EVE OF HIS MARRIAGE)

I could wish my numbers fell
To a gay and merry measure,
Yet for lovers' pensive pleasure
All love's voices mingle well.
Then why hush the tender sorrow
That makes faint your wedding bell
Or forbid that pang to swell
The sweet sadness of tomorrow?
May your love grief's blessing borrow
And outlive the last farewell.
