I AM BORNE ONWARD by SARA TEASDALE

Poet Analysis

First Line: I AM BORNE ONWARD FROM THE FAITH OF MY FATHERS
Last Line: THEY LEANT UPON THEM -- I AM ALONE.
Subject(s): SOLITUDE; LONELINESS;

I am borne onward from the faith of my fathers,
It is far behind me, like a fading song,
But sometimes I am homesick for its triumphant certainties,
I who must break my heart to learn the right from the wrong.

All that I long for, shrink from or strive against,
I must weigh in balances, frail but my own,
My fathers each one had a guardian angel,
They leant upon them -- I am alone.
