THE CAPTAINS OF THE YEARS by ARTHUR RAYMOND MACDOUGALL JR.

First Line: I WATCHED THE CAPTAINS
Last Line: WHILE CHRIST RODE ON AHEAD.
Subject(s): FAITH; JESUS CHRIST; RELIGION; BELIEF; CREED; THEOLOGY;

I watched the Captains
A-riding, riding
Down the years;
The men of mystic grip
Of soul, a-riding
Between a hedge of spears.

I saw their banners
A-floating, floating
Over all,
Till each of them had passed,
And Christ came riding
A donkey lean and small.

I watched the Captains
A-turning, staring,
Proud and set,
At Christ a-riding there—
So calmly riding
The Road men can't forget.

I watched the Captains
Dismounting, waiting—
None now led—
The Captains bowing low!
The Caesars waiting!
While Christ rode on ahead.
