COUNTRY TOWN by L. DALE AHERN

First Line: NOW TWILIGHT'S LAST RED EMBER BLINKS ALONE
Last Line: THE NIGHT UPSETS A HIVE OF GOLDEN BEES.
Subject(s): TOWNS;

Now twilight's last red ember blinks alone
Above the winter's skeletons of trees,
And Venus westward droops her radiant head
While night upsets a hive of golden bees.
A fragment of eternity, this hour
Will throb with things beyond the pulse of time!
In England Edward stakes his throne for love;
In Spain the veins of honor run with slime;
On some bleak prairie road beyond the hills
A weary farm-wife shivers, split with pain;
In southwest Africa at Walvis Bay,
Tired men and women, kneeling, pray for rain . . .
But here is peace -- above the naked trees
The night upsets a hive of golden bees.
