Sabbath comes to a small town Like an old hound After an all-night chase, And only the sparrows under the eaves Break the silence at dawn, Or the wind squeezing under the door. The cattle stand dozing, Heads down at sunrise; And at intervals, Like a guard blowing reveille, A windmill grates, Shrill in the wind. The hens and pullets dart everywhere, And the sparrows along the eaves Keep a ceaseless gossip running, Like old women together after church. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WHAT I LIVE FOR by GEORGE LINNAEUS BANKS A CHILD'S THOUGHT OF GOD by ELIZABETH BARRETT BROWNING INTO BATTLE by JULIAN GRENFELL SUMMER DAWN by WILLIAM MORRIS (1834-1896) TAPESTRY TREES by WILLIAM MORRIS (1834-1896) THE GILLYFLOWER OF GOLD by WILLIAM MORRIS (1834-1896) THE HAYSTACK IN THE FLOODS by WILLIAM MORRIS (1834-1896) |
