THE STREAM by AL-RUSAFI

First Line: POISED BETWEEN ITS BANKS, THE STREAM
Last Line: IN HIS FLAG'S SHADE.

Poised between its banks, the stream
Serenely curls,
And its limpid waters gleam
Like liquid pearls.

With the noon the great trees thrust
Athwart the flow
Shadows, sombre as red rust
Upon its glow.

Lo, the river in its gown
Of blue brocade
Is a mailclad knight, cast down
In his flag's shade.
