OLD ADAM by MARGARET AVISON

First Line: THE SIMPLE HORIZONTAL
Last Line: IN A CIRCUMFERENCE.
Subject(s): LIFE; TIME;

The simple horizontal
Is a lie dull eyes create
And only in a glut of grief
Seems earth prostrate.

Light-years are grim-embrasive,
Elliptical they flow;
Vivid but pearl-deep jewel
This life of days we know.

I see not cruciform but just
One bead of blood from thence,
The heart essential prisoned
In a circumference.
