NIGHT LAUGHTER by LEONARD BACON (1887-1954)

First Line: IN THE GREY SOLITUDES
Last Line: O MOANING LOON?
Subject(s): LOONS;

In the grey solitudes,
When night was falling,
Far in the autumn woods
A loon was calling,

Uttering what distress,
To what replying;
Alone in the wilderness
The voice of one crying.

Fairer because of thee,
How hath the moon
Won this new majesty,
O moaning loon?
