AUGUST SUNSET OVER LAKE CHAMPLAIN by FRANK A. BALCH

First Line: A PEACEFUL SUN HAS SET BEYOND NORTH BEACH
Last Line: NOR WILL PERMIT A SCREEN BEFORE OUR EYES.
Subject(s): EVENING; LAKE CHAMPLAIN; SUNSET; TWILIGHT;

A peaceful sun has set beyond North Beach;
Cloudless the sky, the lake without a wave,
Its silvered waters calm and still, all save
Soft lapping on a wide-sloped sandy reach.
A single boat, a single gull seeks shore,
How brilliant clouds would aid and multiply
The charm of such far-stretched and open sky!
The reel is run and we shall see no more.

Yet wait! Above the mountains now appear
A slender moon, and near it Venus' light!
On crossing paths they grant this rarest sight.
The contoured pines and serrate peaks cut clear;
While star and crescent seem of extra size,
Nor will permit a screen before our eyes.
