SONG BEFORE SORROW by LOUISE A. BALDWIN

First Line: I CAN BE BRAVE WHEN DIM CATHEDRAL BELLS
Last Line: RESOUND THE BRAZEN NOTE OF BUGLE CALLS.
Subject(s): FAITH; PUBLIC WORSHIP; BELIEF; CREED; CHURCH ATTENDANCE;

I can be brave when dim cathedral bells
Invite the soul to peace in morning song;
The quietude of men at prayer impels
A deeper faith in those who would be strong.
And there is calm for every frightened heart
In spring's consistent flowering. Courage steers
A starlit course eternally set apart,
Fixed and unchanging through uncounted years.
I can be brave -- until the echo comes
Of marching hordes and triumphs dearly bought;
(Lost races whisper through the throbbing drums
The reddened secret history has taught) --
While raucous voices raised in flag-draped halls
Resound the brazen note of bugle calls.
