UNDER THE WHARF by IDA COLE BARTLATT

First Line: SILURUS SHOALS AND WATER BUTTERFLIES
Last Line: RISING FROM THIS DARK FLOOD TO SEEK ETERNAL BREATH?
Subject(s): BIRDS; DEATH; FLOODS; GULLS; SEASHORE; WATER; DEAD, THE; SEAGULLS; BEACH; COAST; SHORE;

Silurus shoals and water butterflies
Evade the seagulls as they dip and rise;
The restless, sullen waters gnaw the shore
To build new sandbanks, ever—evermore.

How many human rats crawl here to hide,
And fall asleep, lulled by the lapping tide?
How many souls grope through the mist of death ...
Rising from this dark flood to seek eternal breath?
