THERE WAS A GARDEN by MARIE BARTON

First Line: A CROSS - ONE STAGGERING BENEATH THE WEIGHT
Last Line: HE WAS THE SON OF GOD.
Subject(s): CRUCIFIXION; GETHSEMANE; JESUS CHRIST - CRUCIFIXION;

A cross—One staggering beneath the weight.
(Golgotha shivered, but knew not why)
A mob—goading with spears of scarlet hate
This One condemned to die.

"Now in the place where he was crucified
There was a garden." Her olive trees
Leaned over the wall and shuddering sighed
To the sobbing breeze.

The lilies stirred from sleep and wept at the sound
Of the tumult cleaving the day;
And the grasses said: @3We stand on holy ground—
It was God who passed this way.@1

Men mocked him. Their frenzy billowed and grew
To ghastly impact on Calvary's sod.
Only the garden bowed her heart and knew
He was the Son of God.
