THE TOY BALLOONS by EDNA BECKER

First Line: THE MIRRORED DINING ROOM WAS FILLED
Last Line: AND HELD BY BOARDS AND PLASTERING!
Subject(s): BALLOONS;

The mirrored dining room was filled
With many tables nicely laid,
And to the chairs were tied bright toy
Balloons -- a host of them that spilled
A scattered rainbow as they swayed
And bubbled upward light as joy.

All through the meal we diners toyed
With them, and afterward when we
Were leaving, quite by chance I turned
And saw a few left undestroyed
Still tugging at their moorings three
Unleashed against the ceiling burned.

And, as I looked, I felt a vast
Compassion for those three there high,
All eager for a chance to fling
Their radiance, set free at last,
Unstintedly into the sky --
And held by boards and plastering!
