A CONCEPTION by DAISY MAUD BELLIS

First Line: AND WHEN WE MUST DESCEND OR WE MUST CLIMB
Last Line: SAVE THROUGH THIS PAINFUL PLODDING WE HAVE DONE.
Subject(s): SCIENCE; SONNET (AS LITERARY FORM); SCIENTISTS;

And when we must descend or we must climb
Upon such steps as globules, electrons,
As molecules, or as the stars and suns,
Conceiving thus this universe sublime,
We often attempt its place in word or rhyme,
Forgetful that all strange phenomenon's
Existence is the groping need of one's
Slow orientation in this world of time.
A moment leave this language, formed by man
To mechanize an interchange of thought.
Let's @3feel@1 the glory of a radiant sun
As into higher realms our visions scan
Immensities of nature never caught
Save through this painful plodding we have done.
