BEWILDERMENT by VERNE TAYLOR BENEDICT

First Line: OFTEN WE WONDERED - OVER AND OVER
Last Line: WAS A STRETCH OF SKY WHERE STARS CAME THROUGH.

Often we wondered -- over and over --
Why she followed an errant rover.
She who loved most a quiet room,
The touch of silk, a rose in bloom,
She who wanted beyond all things
A sun-warmed garden, bruised her wings
Trying to follow a wild bird's tune
June to November -- back to June.
And all the roof she ever knew
Was a stretch of sky where stars came through.
