FIRST MATERNITY by KATHARINE BROWN BURT

First Line: OUT OF MY WINDOW THE WOODS ARE A-FLUTTER
Last Line: PARADING HER FIRST YOUNG CONE.
Subject(s): HOSPITALS;

Out of my window the woods are a-flutter,
A starchy birch nurse stalks importantly by,
The patriarch oaks squeek, "Tut-tut!" and mutter,
Matronly beeches nudge them and sigh.
Spinsterly cedars primp envious and mocking,
Dogwood gossips whisper and groan
At a bright-eyed needle-pine, crooning and rocking,
Parading her first young cone.
