Mars flaunts his glittering armor and a flash Of lightning flicks the heavens doomed to smash Man's hopes for peace; infernal weapons clash And leave a trail of misery -- marked justice. A death's head grins beyond the campfire's glow And flecks of crimson stain the moonlit snow. All Hell must laugh in ghoulish glee below At this stark madness -- marked justice. And now, must we still meet the spirit faces Of those we left in France and note the traces Of war-scarred fields, and homes -- the blasted places Bleak desolation -- marked justice? No, we resolve! War's traps shall not prevail! We see in dreams the faces stark and pale Of sons and fathers who in leaden hail Found only death -- marked justice. Remain at home to clothe and feed our needy, Let the foreigner mould bullets for the greedy. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...OUR CHRIST by HARRY WEBB FARRINGTON THE VANITY OF HUMAN WISHES; THE 10TH SATIRE OF JUVENAL, IMITATED by SAMUEL JOHNSON (1709-1784) ASTROPHEL AND STELLA: 68 by PHILIP SIDNEY ADMIRAL, HAIL! by ANNA EMILIA BAGSTAD URANIA; THE WOMAN IN THE MOON: DEDICATION TO HENRY, PRINCE OF WALES by WILLIAM BASSE THE BLIND GIRL OF CASTEL-CUILLE by JACQUES BOE |
