In the purple hush of the twilight hour I enter a cathedral, old and gray, And there beneath its ivy covered tower, I kneel to pray for strength to meet the day. I hear the organ's echoes rise and flow From shadowed nave to lighted altar place -- I gaze upon the tapers' amber glow While thoughts are drifting idly into space. But let me pause at a small wayside shrine Beneath the spreading dome of leafy tree, Where echoes of the homeward loving kine Come on the tranquil evening air to me. There near a weathered cross I kneel to pray And find the strength I ask to meet the day. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...NAMES by SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE THE BALLAD OF CHRISTMAS by WALTER JOHN DE LA MARE TO THE SOUTH ON ITS NEW SLAVERY by PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR THE EVE OF BUNKER HILL [JUNE 16, 1775] by CLINTON SCOLLARD SONNET: 107 by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE VIRGILS GNAT: DEDICATORY SONNET by EDMUND SPENSER |
