How color-conscious is the artist May! She dips her brush back into April showers. October's red is in the tray -- Carmine glows in phlox, petunias, roses. Orange of August flames in nasturtiums, poppies, lily hearts. Into the very sky she reaches, sweeping blue for iris, larkspur, harebells. The green of water where the ocean brims the caverns Is wash for grass and trees and fields. Even the rainbow vats are not exempt. Here, too, she takes a lavish dip. The silver of the stars is brushed upon the Artemisia, And the dusty miller's leaves are moonlight frost. Like some vandal goddess she appropriates the glories of heaven and earth and sea. Her smock is stained with moonrise tints; Her saucy upturned face is smudged with sunset hues, And in her eyes the blue of distant horizons flits As inspiration flickers there and flames.
