HILL-WOMAN by VERNONA CHALMERS

First Line: GLAD THAT I WAS BORN TO THIS
Last Line: DRINKING WISDOM, LEARNED, WISE.
Subject(s): WOMEN;

Glad that I was born to this:
Hills that breast above the hollow
Calling me, with burning bliss
Winged, I lift my heels and follow.

Glad that I was born to know
Hills that stand with piny crest.
Wet with rain and melting snow,
Cone-tipped trees I love the best.

Born to know a meadow-brook,
Babbling, prattling, infant-wise.
Born to love the flowers that look
Wistfully into the skies.

Heart that knows a thousand songs
Man shall never know or pen;
Here is where my heart belongs;
Wandering, seeks this spot again.

Glad that I was born to this
Earth majestic, crowing skies;
Scorning man with nature-kiss,
Drinking wisdom, learned, wise.
