THE IMMIGRANT by MARGUERITE CHAPMAN

First Line: BEYOND THE EMPTY COT, THE LAWN
Last Line: INTO BLEAK ETERNITIES.
Subject(s): DESPAIR;

Beyond the empty cot, the lawn;
Beyond the lawn, the leafless birch;
Beyond the birch, the cheerless street;
Subdued the people stroll to church.

Sadly she turns her gaze within
Surely the later years to see
And she peers on through her heart
Into bleak eternities.
