AN INVITATION TO CELEBRATE THE BIRTHDAY OF THE POET MOORE by JOHN CHALK CLARIS

First Line: O COME AND HAIL THE DAY
Last Line: AND BIND MORE CLOSELY FRIEND TO FRIEND.
Subject(s): BIRTHDAYS; MOORE, THOMAS (1779-1852); POETRY & POETS;

VII.

O COME and hail the day
Which gave the Poet birth,
Whose song when grave or gay,
Whose Muse in tears or mirth,
Still wears a grace, and breathes a tone
@3His@1 song—@3his@1 Muse—can claim alone!

Come, and one sparkling hour
Which not a care shall dim,
We in my woodbine bower
Will dedicate to him;
O come, and o'er the flowers and wine
Let the warm smiles of Beauty shine!

And we will weave a chain
Of song from those which he
Hath given in many a strain
Of matchless minstrelsy,
Till as our hearts and voices blend
His spirit shall on ours' descend
And bind more closely friend to friend.
