FOREVER by BERTHA MILLER COLLINS

First Line: AWAY AND AWAY IN THE FAR BLUE DISTANCE, LIFE
Last Line: WHICH IS CARRIED AWAY FOREVER, EVER . . . AYE!
Subject(s): FUTURE LIFE; LIFE; SINGING & SINGERS; RETRIBUTION; ETERNITY; AFTER LIFE; SONGS;

Away and away in the far blue distance, life
invisible vanishes where the rough grey stone
with its night-dark spruce leans hard against the sky.

Forever's the last soft note that is sung by one
who stands in a golden robe where shadows are deep
in the vaulted arc. A cowl is over the head.

For waiting hands, which are folded across the breast,
is held a soul. Now a fragile beauty of self
which is carried away forever, ever . . . aye!
