THE GRIND by EMMETT MALOY COUNTS

First Line: THRILL, BARD, SING OF THE DALE AND THE RIVER
Last Line: TOO BUSY TO THINK.
Subject(s): SLAVERY; SERFS;

Thrill, bard, sing of the dale and the river;
Trill, bird, pipe your lay to the sky;
Slave, I, soul and energy giver—
Too busy am I.

Churn, sea, forward and backward forever;
Turn you, freeman, away from the snow;
Chained, I, bound Arcadyward never—
Too busy to go.

Muse, friend, following booster and scoffer;
Choose and ponder the depths you drink;
Lost, I, to all that reveries offer—
Too busy to think.
