Come, walk with me, Contentment, through the night, Your torch undimmed by surging doubt or fears -- As stars that glint the spinning Earth with light, My Mithras, to console declining years. For I, who saw the Morn far in the past, Know summers bloom and wither to decay, Life's graying embers smolder to the last And leave but dross -- the ash of yesterday. Give back to me, my frailty to relieve, Unfettered Mind, to challenge and persuade My waning flesh. Content, though bowed to grieve, I pass the approaching Shadow unafraid. And, having passed, Contentment, you will play The leading role in Heaven's eternal day. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...GERONTION by THOMAS STEARNS ELIOT THE ODYSSEY: THE GARDENS OF ALCINOUS by HOMER THE EARLY PRIMROSE by HENRY KIRKE WHITE VERS LIBRE by FRANKLIN PIERCE ADAMS THRENODY by THOMAS LOVELL BEDDOES A PRAIRIE MOTHER'S LULLABY by EARL ALONZO BRININSTOOL DIS ALITER VISUM; OR, LE BYRON DE NOS JOURS by ROBERT BROWNING |
