ROSE PETALS by BLANCHE WHALEN CRITZMAN

First Line: ROSE PETALS, ROSE PETALS, EVERYWHERE LYING
Last Line: A TEAR.
Subject(s): FLOWERS; GARDENS & GARDENING; LOVE; ROSES;

Rose Petals, rose petals, everywhere lying,
Speak to my heart of a love that is dying,
Withered and sere,
Faded yet dear,
Queer,
How a tiny plant knows;
Strange, the heart of a rose
Can be stricken with death.
Canker, unbidden, eats its slow way
And a beautiful love falls into decay
With the wind's slightest breath.
Rose petals, rose petals, crumpled and old,
Only the embers of love do you hold;
A fancy, a fear,
A memory dear,
A tear.
