VOICES OF SCORN by WILLIAM HENRY DAVIES

Poet Analysis

First Line: WHEN I HAD THOUGHT MY END WAS NEAR
Last Line: REPROVES ME WITH ITS WHOLESOME LAUGHTER!
Subject(s): DISDAIN; SCORN;

When I had thought my end was near,
And I must soon prepare to die –
'Be quick! Be quick!' the Mavis called,
And 'Haw, Haw, Haw!' the Rooks did cry.

What bird, with even greater scorn,
Has come so quickly following after?
Is this the Chaffinch – how his voice
Reproves me with its wholesome laughter!
