I too "hate war," for I have known glad youth, Their eager, restless, hopeful hearts; each year I see them in each changing class appear, The while I guide them in the ways of truth. I pray that not again our land may see A world made mad . . . that disillusionment From carnage and from chaos never more May hold us with a pall of atrophy, Of frenzied calm, satiric discontent More deadly far than death.
