IMPORTANT VOICE by JESSIE M. DOWLIN

First Line: QUIET HELD THE HOUSE, AND ALL
Last Line: UNTIL THE IMPORTANT COCK HAD SPOKEN?
Subject(s): ANIMALS; HOUSES; SILENCE; SLEEP; VOICES;

Quiet held the house, and all
The staid herd dreamed in stanchioned stall;
Sheep and horse and watchdog slept;
Upon the hill the red fox kept
His vigil, puzzling at the span
Of quiet round the home of man;
Then jerkily the rooster spoke,
And man and drowsy beast awoke;
How could they know that day had broken
Until the important cock had spoken?
