GEORGE WASHINGTON by MARYANN WEEKS ELLIS

First Line: FIRST IN WAR WAS HE
Last Line: HIS VALIANT DEEDS WILL EVER RECALL.
Subject(s): PRESIDENTS, UNITED STATES; WASHINGTON, GEORGE (1732-1799);

"First in war" was he,
A soldier and a friend.
A people's freedom was his field,
Which loyally he did defend.

"First in peace" was he,
A leader tested and tried.
A new-born nation was his realm
Which wisely he did guide.

"First in their hearts" was he --
Brave hearts of his countrymen,
Who happy now, from bondage free,
Most gratefully did adore him.

"Father of his country," @3is@1 he,
Honored and revered by all,
Whose name down through the ages
His valiant deeds will ever recall.
