WORLD-WINTER by LAURA BELL EVERETT

First Line: WANDERING ON YESTEREEN
Last Line: OF LASTING PEACE?
Subject(s): PEACE; SOCIAL PROTEST; WAR;

Wandering on yestereen
Through the woods in autumn flush,
I saw gold that had been green,
Stood before the Burning Bush.
Lost
In frost
Of a single night
Is my altar's garnishing;
Yet I know
Through storm and snow
Comes the spring.

Years joined years when nations met
With no battle-flags unfurled,
When, despite distrust and fret,
War seemed banished from the world;
Then
For men
A single day—
Goodwill lost—
Brought holocaust.
When shall this world-winter cease?
When bloom the May
Of lasting peace?
