THE PEASANT'S APOLOGY by FORD MADOX FORD

First Line: DOWN NEAR THE EARTH
Last Line: BITTERNESS AND BLACKNESS FROM THE EARTH.
Subject(s): GRIEF; PEASANTRY; SORROW; SADNESS;

DOWN near the earth
On the steaming furrows
Things are harsh and black enough
Dearth there is and lack enough,
And immemorial sorrows
Stultify sweet mirth
Till she borrows
Bitterness and blackness from the earth.
