ODE ON THE DEATH OF HAIG'S HORSE: 7 by DOUGLAS GARMAN

First Line: AN ARMY'S VOICE! WE HAVE AN ARMY YET
Last Line: OUR LOYAL PASSION FOR OUR TASTELESS KINGS.
Subject(s): HAIG, DOUGLAS. 1ST EARL HAIG (1861-1928); MILITARY SERVICE, COMPULSORY; CONSCRIPTION; MILITARY DRAFT; SELECTIVE SERVICE;

An army's voice! We have an army yet,
Tho' all men else their warlike dreams forget,
Confused by arty snobs and high-brow Powers;
Thank Him who isled us here, and roughly set
His Briton in blown froth and storming showers.
They've got a voice, with which to pay the debt
Of boundless hate and ignorance and regret
To those great nags they have preferred to ours —
Preferred to ours, O God, by brute control!
O soldiers, guard us, guard the pride, the soul
Of England, keep our equine honour whole
By saving one true steed of freedom, known
To cheer the people and our aged throne —
This gallant horseflesh out of which there springs
Our loyal passion for our tasteless kings.
