DAPHNE WALKS IN THE SNOW by TROY GARRISON

First Line: HER FEET, SKIMMING OVER THE FROZEN MOONLIGHT
Last Line: UPON THE MOON-ENCRUSTED SNOW.
Subject(s): SNOW;

Her feet, skimming over the frozen moonlight,
Make shadowed sounds
Mirrored in the silence;
Her hair enshrines the face
Where two blue candles burn
In clear-flamed vigil over thoughts of love;
Her cheeks are crystal, filled with wine
That warms the cold-lipped wind to thirst --
Whiter, lighter than the snowflakes,
Daphne walks with frail delight
Upon the moon-encrusted snow.

Dam back the flood of melody with stars:
Let white notes drop with feathered ease
Into the darker music of her hair --
The wind in soft-tongued omen spins
A promise from the unstruck harp
That quivers with expectant life
When Daphne walks with frail delight
Upon the moon-encrusted snow.
