THE TIMEPIECE by RICHARD SOLOMON GEDNEY

First Line: LONG HAS IT UTTERED ITS WARNING CRY
Last Line: STILL LET THEM REST IN THEIR LOWLY BED!
Subject(s): DEATH; FAREWELL; TIME; DEAD, THE; PARTING;

Long has it uttered its warning cry,
With solemn voice through years gone by,—
That for Youth and Beauty there waits the tomb,
The triumph of Death and the conqueror Worm:
It speaks of a land, to which those who have gone,
Friends left on earth for ever shall mourn,
Never! oh, never! again to return!
For them in vain shall our fond hearts yearn!

Sorrow and parting—pain and care—
Would we recall the freed to share?
And while Time shall move it will be so;
Transient and few are Hope's gay beams,
Soon quenched in Sorrow's bitter streams:
Then, oh, disturb not the sleep of the dead,
Still let them rest in their lowly bed!
