RESPITE by CAROLINE GILTINAN

First Line: BY COWARDICE AND TERROR
Last Line: WITHHOLDING STILL THE NAIL.

By cowardice and terror
A little soul lay torn
Believing this her Calvary:
The pressure of one thorn.

God watched with patient pity
While she grew weak and pale
And deeper, deeper pressed the thorn --
Withholding still the nail.
