AFTER IKKYU: 49 by JAMES HARRISON

Poet Analysis

First Line: JESUS WANTS ME FOR A SUNBEAM, I SANG IN SUNDAY
Last Line: A LITTLE BOY BRED THIS MAN WITH NO THOUGHT OF THE FUTURE.

@3Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.@1 I sang in Sunday
school a lifetime ago, way up in cold country
where there wasn't much sun. A sunbeam in winter
made one recoil, and everyone stared mutely upward.
The bogeyman still smiles, now from a glass
of whiskey, then from a farmhouse root cellar.
A little boy bred this man with no thought of the future.
